The £10m smiles: But Adrian Chiles said money had nothing to do with his and co-host Christine Bleakley's defection from the BBC to ITV


Adrian Chiles yesterday claimed he was forced out by the BBC and his move to ITV had nothing to do with the highly lucrative £6million contract he was offered.

But his long-standing co-host Christine Bleakley stayed silent about her new £4million deal with the commercial channel, instead saying she defected from the BBC purely to be with Chiles.

Chiles, 43, said he and Miss Bleakley, quit after being put under ' intolerable pressure' by corporation chiefs.

At the launch of Daybreak, the replacement for GMTV which the pair will host from next week, he said he had not been tempted by a 'suitcase of money' and was not motivated by greed.

The presenter announced he was leaving the BBC in April after it emerged that Chris Evans would take his place on the Friday edition of The One Show, the programme which originally teamed Chiles with Miss Bleakley, 31.

She followed him out of the door two months later. He is understood to have been receiving around £1milliona year at the BBC, while she was thought to be earning £100,000 a year.

Chiles said: 'The past has been slightly re-written, which I am slightly annoyed about.

'They are trying to portray it as a classic big money move to ITV, when nothing could be further from the truth.

'We were both very happy to stay there, didn't want any more money and I just wanted to carry on doing a successful programme exactly as we had, i.e. The One Show five days a week, The Apprentice and Match of the Day 2.

'But obviously the changes suggested on The One Show I couldn't live with and that's why I left.

'We were both put under intolerable pressure.'

Miss Bleakley said of her move: 'The first day he left I thought, I've lost my right arm here and this is just strange.'

Speaking at the weekend, BBC1 controller Jay Hunt said Chiles had been offered other shows to try to keep him at the channel.

Magical: Roger Federer reproduced his stunning 'through-the-legs' winner in his first round win at Flushing Meadows


Roger Federer brought Flushing Meadows to its feet on the US Open's first night with a repeat of his 'Don't try this at home' miracle winner hit through the legs.

The world No 2 pulled off a similar trick in the semi-final against Novak Djokovic last year (pictured below), but this time his extraordinary recovery when retrieving a lob from first-round opponent Brian Dabul was even better.

Administering a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 thrashing, Federer was within a few feet of the back fence when, having sprinted from the net, he whipped back the shot known as a 'Tweener' while facing the wrong way.

It completely wrong-footed the Argentinian, who responded with a helpless shrug as the ball, struck at 80mph, flew past him for a clean winner.

Federer said: 'I've only hit a few of those in my life and to do two on Centre Court in night sessions is amazing.

'Maybe in terms of difficulty this one was harder than last year because I had to run a longer distance and was further back. 'I had to give it a really big push at the end, I didn't have time to set the shot up. So I felt like this one was incredible again.

'When I turned round I couldn't believe that it had landed in the corner. You could see from my reaction I couldn't believe it.

'Last year's was probably a little bit more important just because I think it was 0-30 to go 0-40, two points away from the match, and it was a semi-final.'

Federer does not explicitly practise the shot and said: 'It's not like I ask to be fed them, it just happens or not. I might hit just one in a session.'

Tornado of fire: Whirling vortex of flame tears through Hawaii brush

Vortex: Swirling smoke and a column of fire tears through brush on Hawaii's Big Island


As if a normal twister wasn't bad enough, a terrifying combination of strong winds and brush fires have combined to create this tornado of fire.

This extremely rare phenomenon was captured on camera as the unstoppable fire whirl tore through brush along a main road on Hawaii's Big Island.

Swirls of thick black smoke can be seen spinning in a vortex as flames leap more than 20ft from the ground.

The brush fire destroyed around 1,400 acres of land and is still continuing to burn on parts of the island after the Department of Land and Natural Resources managed to contain 60 per cent of the wildfires.

No injuries have been reported by the blaze but firefighters were forced to retreat to a safe distance after the fire whirl was created.

Fire whirls, also known as fire devils or fire tornados, are caused when a fire acquires a vertical vorticity and creates a while.


Twister: The fire tornado is created by unique conditions and can reach hundreds of feet into the air


It occurs when a column of warm, rising air is enveloped by flames - causing low pressure to appear around the ground.

Cooler air then rushes in to replace the rising air, creating a vortex which can pull flames up to hundreds of metres above the ground.

In 1923, a fire tornado ignited by the Great Kanto earthquake in Tokyo grew to the size of a large city and killed 38,000 people in just 15 minutes.

It comes after another fire tornado tore through crop fields in Aracatuba, southern Brazil, after months of drought.

The whirlwind of flames was also captured on camera as wildfires ravaged the area in the southern Sao Paulo state.

Robert Pattinson hit up the Hollywood party scene last night with an attractive older blonde on his arm.

But girlfriend Kristen Stewart need not lose any sleep, Pattinson was just enjoying a night out with his publicist, Stephanie Ritz.

The two stopped by the Soho House before joining the rest of the Hollywood elite at Jimmy Fallon's post Emmy party at Trousdale.

Pattinson was dressed casually in jeans and a T-shirt, with a baseball cap pulled down low. The Twilight star was also sporting a big bushy beard.

Pattinson and Stewart met on the set of the first Twilight film. Their on-set chemistry was palpable and immediately sparked rumours of an off-set romance between the two.

The couple kept the public guessing, until Pattinson finally confirmed that he was in fact dating his leading lady.

The 24-year-old actor put an end to the months of speculation at the BAFTA Awards in London back in February.

'It is extremely difficult but we are together, yes,' Patinson confessed to The Sun. 'We can't arrive at the same time because of the fans. It goes crazy.

'We have to do all this stuff to avoid attention.'

Pattinson's big breakthrough role was when he played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

But he shot to superstardom as angst-ridden vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga.

Pattinson's career is red hot right now.

Pattinson has recently been filming Water For Elephants which he will star in opposite Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon.

He plays Jacob Jankowski, a veterinary student who throws it all in and runs off and joins the circus. Once there he falls in love with the elephant trainer's wife, played by Witherspoon.

Pattinson is next scheduled to start filming on the last Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn, which will be split into two parts and released over two years.

However, the movie may be delayed due to violence in Rio De Janeiro, in Brazil, where filming is due to occur.

A spokesman for film company Summit, told U.S. website, RadarOnline: 'The possibility of filming portions of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 in Brazil has always been under consideration and we are continuing to scout locations within the country.'

Breaking Dawn- Part 1 is currently set to be released in November 2011 with Part 2 out in November 2012.

With thousands of Hollywood stars living in Los Angeles, the likelihood of two bumping into each other is higher than average.

So it's no wonder Kate Beckinsale didn't look too surprised when she bumped into actress Brooke Shields as she took daughter Lily to get her nails done.

The 37-year-old actress decided to treat nine-year-old Lily to some pampering at the Nail Spa Lane in Santa Monica when she ran into Brooke, who was there with her own daughters Rowan, seven, and four-year-old Grier.

Kate, who was recently named the third hottest mother in Hollywood in a new poll, looked relaxed and casual in her outfit of a white long-sleeved T-shirt and grey skinny jeans.

She even came prepared for the occasion, switching her heels for flip-flops to ensure her pedicure remained in tact as she left the salon.

But it was just a pedicure for Brooke, who has her right hand bandaged up after breaking it during rehearsals for new musical Leap Of Faith.

While the local sheriff is determined to stop Nightingale taking advantage of the locals, everything changes when he meets waitress Marva, played by Brooke, and her son.

The show is due to officially open on October 3rd at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre.

MALAYSIA MINTA TEBUSAN 15 MILIAR UNTUK 6 NELAYAN INDONESIA UNTUK KEBEBASANNYA

Malaysia ternyata menahan enam nelayan Indonesia dan meminta “tebusan” Rp 2,5 miliar per nelayan. Keenam nelayan itu berasal dari Kabupaten Langkat, Sumatera Utara, dan ditahan sejak 9 Juli lalu. Seperti dilansir Tribunnews yang dikutip ruanghati.com, keenam nelayan itu dianggap memasuki wilayah perairan Malaysia tanpa izin. Padahal, saat itu mereka mencari ikan di perairan Batuputih, sekitar 2 mil sebelum perbatasan laut Indonesia-Malaysia.

Hubungan kedua negara serumpun yang pasang surut sejak dahulu

“Mereka dikenai denda 100 sampai satu juta ringgit atau sekitar 2,5 miliar. Pihak keluarga sudah menghubungi Kedutaan Besar Indonesia di Malaysia, namun belum mendapat tanggapan. Keenam nelayan itu masih meringkuk di penjara Keddah, Malaysia,” tutur sumber Tribun. Menyikapi hal tersebut anggota Komisi I DPR Ramadhan Pohan berharap Malaysia melepaskan para nelayan itu dan tidak tidak semakin memperkeruh suasana. Menurut dia, denda tersebut sangat tidak masuk akal.

“Malaysia jangan matre lah. Hal seperti itu sudah biasa karena Indonesia juga sering menangkap nelayan Malaysia dan kemudian membebaskannya. Suasana saat ini masih sangat sensitif setelah muncul kasus penangkapan tiga petugas Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan dan ancaman hukuman mati terhadap 177 WNI di Malaysia,” kata politisi Partai Demokrat itu. Ramadhan Pohan mengimbau Pemerintah Malaysia agar para nelayan itu dibebaskan tanpa syarat. Dia juga mendesak Pemerintah RI untuk terus mengupayakan cara-cara diplomasi.

Sementara itu Indria Samego, pengamat politik dari Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), berpendapat bahwa Menteri Luar Negeri Marty Natalegawa harus menaikan posisi tawar terhadap Menlu Malaysia. Marty juga harus menempuh cara lain yang jauh dari konfrontatif. “Bagaimanapun kita butuh Malaysia. Kalau TKI yang bekerja di Malaysia ditarik, mereka akan kesulitan mencari kerja,” ujarnya.

Interpelasi
Anggota Komisi I DPR Lily Chodijah Wahid menilai pemerintah telah melanggar konstitusi karena tidak bisa menegakkan kedaulatan negara menyusul ketegangan dengan Malaysia.  “Presiden melanggar konstitusi karena tidak bisa mejaga kedaulatan negara. Kalau enggak sanggup, ada kesempatan kok mundur. Silakan saja mundur,” kata Lily.

Dia pun mengancam akan menggalang dukungan untuk mengajukan interpelasi. “Kami memberikan waktu beberapa hari kepada Menteri Luar Negeri untuk melakukan langkah diplomatik. Jika belum ada perbaikan, akan kita gulirkan interpelasi. Ini serius,” katanya. Menanggapi hal itu, Wakil Ketua DPR Priyo Budi Santoso mengatakan bahwa penggunaan hak interplasi merupakan hak anggota. Pihaknya tidak akan menghentikan atau menyarankan penggunaan hak tersebut.

“Sebagai pimpinan DPR kami hanya meminta segera proses interplasi itu kalau memang diusulkan. Tapi saya tidak menyarankan atau menghalangi,” ujarnya. Sementara itu, Ketua Fraksi Partai Demokrat Muhammad Jafar Hafsah mempertanyakan pengusulan interpelasi. Karena, semua persoalan itu sudah diserahkan ke Menteri Luar Negeri.

International Young Inventor Project Olympiad (IYIPO)
Enam Pelajar Indonesia Sabet Medali IYIPOPara pelajar Indonesia kembali unjuk gigi dalam ajang kompetisi internasional. Setelah tahun lalu hanya mendapatkan dua medali, tahun ini prestasi pelajar Indonesia mengalami peningkatan dengan meraih empat medali yakni, satu medali emas dan tiga medali perak pada ajang International Young Inventor Project Olympiad (IYIPO) ke-3 di Tbilisi, Georgia, 14 - 16 Mei. 

Adapun, untuk satu medali emas dipersembahkan Ridho Assidicky (Sragen Boarding Bilingual School) untuk kategori biologi, dan tiga medali perak dipersembahkan oleh Putut dan Huda (keduanya dari SMA Semesta Semarang) untuk kategori biologi, Muhammad Royan (Sragen Boarding Bilingual School) dan Rahmat Hidayah (SMA Pribadi Depok School) untuk kategori matematika, dan Muhammad Masruh Baldawi (SMP Negeri 2 Watumalang, Wonosobo) untuk kategori fisika.Yang lebih mengejutkan, tambah Ahmad, proyek biologi Ridho Assidicky yang mengangkat tema Potential Ornamental Plants as Noise Reducing Factors atau 'Potensi Tanaman Ornamental Sebagai Peredam Kebisingan', berhasil mengalahkan proyek-proyek para peserta dari negara maju lainnya untuk kategori biologi pada ajang tahunan yang diikuti 50 proyek dari 21 negara tersebut.
